Wicker and rattan are two terms that commonly are confused and very often used interchangeably. This makes it difficult to understand whether these words have the same meaning or not. To clear up all of the confusion, wicker and rattan are not the same. In fact, these two terms refer to completely different things.
What Is Rattan?
Rattan is created from tropical palm trees found in Southeast Asia. It grows upward of 100’! Once rattan grows to a certain point, it bends back down to the ground. It can even grow back into the ground like vines. It is one of the strongest wood species in the world. While it looks and feels like bamboo, the main difference between the two species is that bamboo doesn't bend like rattan does.Rattan is a popular choice for large pieces of furniture like coffee tables or accent chairs. Balance out your rattan furniture with a soft area rug and cashmere throw blanket.
What is Wicker?
Wicker is a style of weave that is commonly used for baskets and furniture. Dating back to Ancient Egypt, wicker is a technique that has been passed down through the ages and continues to be prevalent in modern furniture design. Scientists and archaeologists have discovered wicker furniture dating as far back as 3,000 B.C. The tombs of wealthy pharaohs have been found to contain wicker baskets, boxes, chairs, and chests. The appeal of the weave is distinctive and equally creative.
Rattan can be used in any variety of designs. For example, rattan can be wrapped or weaved around furniture frames that range from modern, classical, contemporary, or vintage.Overall, Rattan furniture is lightweight, durable, stylish and affordable. It's everything that a consumer wants out of their garden furniture, and that's why it's so popular.
Wicker is also popular for furniture design, but the main difference is that wicker furniture can be composed of multiple types of material. For instance, a wicker furniture set can be composed of cane, straw, reeds, willows, and of course rattan itself . The one downside to wicker furniture sets is that they may not be as durable and easy to clean as rattan, but this of course is dependent on what material the furniture set is composed of.
Durability. Natural rattan furniture is exceptionally strong and durable, of course, if it is protected from the outdoor elements and if it is made according to the highest quality workmanship standards. Quality synthetic rattan is extremely durable as well but there is one major difference. In contrary to natural rattan furniture, our all-weather rattan collection can be left outdoors all year round without the need to worry about the harsh outdoor conditions affecting its beauty or durability.
Comfort. There is no difference between natural and synthetic rattan when it comes to comfort. Instead, the level of comfort your rattan garden furniture will provide you with depends on the design and quality of weaving as well as some other factors such as the size of the furniture because even the cosiest piece of furniture will feel uncomfortable if it is too large for instance. Also, the key pieces of furniture such as rattan garden chairs are typically used with chair cushions which increase both the comfort and the overall aesthetic appeal of the furniture.
Care and maintenance. Theoretically, both natural and synthetic rattan furniture require virtually no care other than routine cleaning with mild soapy water. However, since natural rattan is vulnerable to the effects of the weather, synthetic rattan garden furniture is an absolute winner when it comes to care and maintenance required to keep it looking visually appealing, of course, under condition that it is made from high quality all-weather fibre. As already mentioned earlier, quality synthetic rattan garden furniture can easily be left outdoors all year round and it will remain just as beautiful, strong and durable. So if you are not prepared to watch for the weather forecast and rain clouds in order to protect your garden furniture either by covering it with a water-resistant furniture cover or move it indoors, you are highly recommended to choose synthetic over natural rattan garden furniture.
